ROAM Data introduces mobile NFC, magnetic card reader combo

BBR Staff Writer Published 09 April 2012

ROAM Data has debuted agnostic card reader with near-field communication and magnetic stripe combined called ‘NFC Swipe’ marking a milestone for low cost contactless acceptance of mobile payments.

The new offering has the ability to work on hundreds of different smart phones and tablets and PCs, said the service provider.

Adopting NFC and Contactless technology while supporting existing magnetic stripe technology, ROAM has plans for full commercial launch of the NFC Swipe in mid 2012.

NFC includes a set of standards for smart-phones and other mobile devices to enable radio communication between them by touching the devices together or putting them in close proximity to each other, claims ROAM.

NFC supported applications include contactless payment transactions, service discovery to pull information and ads, peer-to-peer data transfer among others.

Visa payWave and MasterCard PayPass specifications will be compatible with NFC Swipe, the de facto standards that govern contactless payments globally.

The readers will work with ROAM's card acceptance applications ROAMpay X, as well as those of its white label partners.

ROAM will also offer an API for 3rd Parties building its own applications to power the secure NFC Swipe reader.
